When designer Michelle Boudreau was tapped for the Mesa Modern project by producer Karen Okner, she wanted the glorious Palm Springs landscape to inform the interior. Rather than going typical midcentury modern, Boudreau conceived the 3,200-square-foot, open-plan house as “more of a Mediterranean modernist architectural project.”
To that end, Boudreau brought in Stefanie Stroud, Ferguson’s lighting specialist, to fit out not only lighting, but also appliances and plumbing. Boudreau gave Stroud free reign to choose products with a contemporary feel, but with “a nod to midcentury design.”

In the kitchen, cabinets line one wall and a black island divides the space cleanly. The appliances are high tech: a JennAir stove with sensors and a refrigerator with an all-black interior, both in Noir. Boudreau’s choice of metals and finishes bring in sunshine. The fixtures are by Brizo.

In the lounge, Mitzi pendants are silhouetted against a fireplace framed in black tiles. The sofa’s burnt orange mirrors sunset splendor.
Boudreau chose “soft, delicate, darker” colors in the bedrooms to play off desert nighttime hues. The bathroom features Ferguson fixtures and sconces flanking the black tub as well as a stylish chair by Amorph. Luxe Brizo plumbing in gold complements the black accents. Discreet recessed LED strips softly illuminate the shower.

In keeping with the California lifestyle, outside lounges, dining and bar areas make for private moments. A firepit out front welcomes guests on cold desert nights.
For Mesa Modern, Boudreau envisioned an update to a signature California style that would honor its past but, instead, the designer set a new path into the future.
