In the competitive world of New York City real estate, empty apartments rarely stay on the market for long. It’s no wonder then that when the unit directly above this family of four’s Upper East Side apartment became available, they jumped at the chance to expand their living space. How to join the two became the job for designer Eve Robinson, who envisioned creating a dramatic moment with a showstopper of a staircase off the main foyer that would catch—and hold—the eye.

Finished in Stucco Veneziano, the staircase’s curved wall gives off an incandescence that plays off the wooded spindles accented with polished nickel. The family unanimously voted for blue as their favorite color, so Robinson opted for the Elizabeth Deacon sky-blue stair runner—extending luxuriously to the second floor—and a complementary silk border in a lighter shade.

The staircase completed, Robinson moved to brighten up the living room in gray and blue tones, finishing in custom Cove moldings. Robinson mixed textures and pearl hues to carry the theme into the St. Charles kitchen, outfitted with Miele and Sub-Zero appliances and Ferguson fixtures. Contrasting Silestone countertops by Cosentino unify the space.

As the designer remarked, “I love the idea of coming down these stairs. It makes you feel so special.”
